All parents know that baby sleep is the number one topic in the first few months. Yet, few realize that a well-established routine can make the difference between a nightmare night and one where you also get some rest.
Why does a baby need a routine?
A baby's brain develops rapidly and needs predictability. When the same things happen in the same order every evening, their brain learns to associate those cues with sleep. The result? They fall asleep more easily, wake up less often, and sleep more deeply.
At what age should you start a routine?
You can start introducing routine elements as early as 6-8 weeks. It doesn't have to be perfect — consistency is key. By 3-4 months, most babies are ready for a clearer evening routine.
A simple routine that works
You don't need 10 steps and expensive products. Here’s a basic routine:
- 6:30 PM — warm bath (no more than 10 minutes)
- 6:45 PM — gentle massage with certified baby oil
- 7:00 PM — breastfeeding or bottle in dim light
- 7:15 PM — lullaby or soothing music
- 7:30 PM — placed in crib awake but drowsy
The key is to put the baby in the crib before they fall completely asleep — this teaches them to self-soothe.
What sabotages baby sleep
- Screens (phone, TV) at least 1 hour before bedtime
- Bright light in the evening — use a warm bulb, max 10W
- Changing bedtime by more than 30 minutes
- Clothes or bedding made of synthetic materials that irritate the skin
When to seek help
If your baby wakes more than 4-5 times a night after 6 months of age or seems constantly agitated, talk to your pediatrician. Sometimes there are medical causes — reflux, colic, intolerances — that affect sleep.
At Nuzelio, you'll find bed linen made from OEKO-TEX certified organic cotton, which doesn't irritate sensitive baby skin and contributes to a more peaceful sleep.
